Ceramic Painting

Generally speaking, it refers to painting on ceramic objects with ceramic pigments as the carrier, also known as ceramic painting. Depending on the selected pigments and the temperature at which they are fired (baked) in the kiln, they can be classified into underglaze, mid-glaze and overglaze colors.

🔥
Underglaze Painting

It refers to the process of directly painting on the body with high-temperature ceramic pigments or painting on the body that has been fired at a low temperature based on the pattern of the object, and then covering the surface with a layer of transparent glaze and firing it at a high temperature in one go. The characteristic of underglaze painting is that the patterns depicted are fired simultaneously with the body glaze at high temperatures, allowing the pigments to fully penetrate the body glaze. The resulting works have a smooth and lustrous porcelain surface, transparent and elegant colors, a full sense of moisture, are durable and will never fade or fall off.

Overglaze Painting

Generally, it is a process of comprehensive decorative painting on the surface of ceramic products that have been fired. After the painting is completed, it is put into the kiln for baking to produce the finished product. The colorants used have relatively lower temperatures for underglaze and underglaze firing and baking. The characteristics of overglaze painting lie in the fact that the decoration progresses from simple to complex, the colors increase from one to multiple, and the works are bright in color. Traditional overglaze colors include ancient colors, pastel colors, new colors, red and green colors, light crimson colors, etc. Although the techniques and skills vary, the general process is as follows: porcelain body (or plain body) - picture design - painting (outlining) - coloring - baking, etc.

Underglaze Painting

One type of work is created by applying a base glaze on the surface of the body, then covering it with another layer of glaze and firing it in a kiln. Another technique involves painting on the surface of finished ceramic vessels with medium-temperature pigments and then firing them in a kiln to ensure that the pigments in the painting blend organically with the glaze on the surface of the ceramic vessels.

💡

Ceramic painting and ceramic decal techniques have fundamental differences. Ceramic decals can be industrialized and mass-produced. Ceramic painting art is based on hand painting, and the aesthetic value expressed by the works is inseparable from the artistic expression.
